5 Foreign Policy and Delegitimisation: Socialist Zionism in the Aftermath of the Six-Day War

Socialist Zionist foreign policy enjoyed relatively broad support in the 1948-67 period. Although security was a central concern during this time, it involved considerations mostly at the strategic and tactical level. The public consensus which surrounded the foreign policy of Mapai had not been tested by the issue of territorial integrity, which plagued the Zionist movement in the Yishuv period.

The Six-Day War, in which Israel occupied substantial territories from three Arab states, created a growing dissonance between official ideology and public beliefs. As in the case of the internal delegitimisation, there were a number of interactive foreign policy processes which worked against Socialist Zionism. Perhaps the most important change focused on the transition from an instrumental to a normative perception of the occupied territories. This change was bolstered by a radicalisation of the image of the Arabs and Palestinians among the public in general, and, in particular, among the up and coming demographic groups, the religious and Oriental communities. Cumulatively, these developments led to the delegitimisation of Labour's foreign policy and the breakdown of the national consensus.
